STEPHENVILLE (February 21, 2017) — Students and graduates from the Tarleton State University Upward Bound Project and Educational Talent Search will celebrate the 2017 National TRIO Day on Saturday, Feb. 25, expressing appreciation to the community for its support.

For millions of students from low-income families who strive to be the first in their families to attend and graduate from college, seven federally funded programs called TRIO are making a world of difference.

Tarleton has served almost 1,000 high school students from the Cross Timbers since receiving its Upward Bound Project in 1981. Currently, the program serves 95 students from nine high schools in Erath, Comanche and Bosque counties.

Ninety percent of Tarleton Upward Bound participants enroll in college, and 60 percent graduate with a postsecondary degree. Both of these statistics are higher than national and state averages.

In September 2016, Tarleton received a $1.18 million Educational Talent Search (ETS) grant. While still in the formative stages, ETS will serve 500 area junior high and high school students from 12 schools in this region.

Today, more than 1,000 colleges, universities and community agencies host more than 2,800 TRIO projects that serve approximately 820,000 young people and adults. TRIO services include: assistance in choosing a college; tutoring; personal and financial counseling; career counseling; assistance in applying to college; workplace and college visits; special instruction in reading, writing, study skills, and mathematics; assistance in applying for financial aid; and academic support in high school.
