TexAnns rock TAMU-International in doubleheader sweep

STEPHENVILLE (March 13, 2017) – The Tarleton bats were lining hits all over the field while the pitchers were dealing for the TexAnns as they came away with a pair of wins over Texas A&M International where they outscored the Dustdevils 15-1 in two games on Monday at the Tarleton Softball Complex.

“I thought we executed well in all phases of the game today,” said head coach Mark Cumpian. “Jordan and Haley did an outstanding job pitching and we got contributions from everyone at the plate. I’m proud of everyone’s effort and how they competed to get these two wins at home.”

Game 1: Tarleton 8, Texas A&M International 0 (6)

Jordan Withrow improved to 5-4 on the season after firing a complete game four-hit shutout and striking out seven with only one walk in the dominating outing.

The TexAnns had a dozen hits in the opener, led by Nyka Wood going 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and Alyssa Ringhausen going 3-for-4 and drove in a run.

Wood put the TexAnns on the board early and often, with an RBI single down the right field line in the first inning to drive in Maddie Quintanar after she led the inning off with a single.

After both teams had scoreless innings through the second and third innings, the TexAnn bats exploded for four runs in the fourth inning to pull away. With runners on the corners and one out, Meghann Wrinkle singled to center to score Marisa Flores and give the TexAnns a 3-0 lead. Wood followed with a two-run double to left center and a 5-0 advantage.

The TexAnns added two more runs in the fifth inning when Flores scored on a wild pitch and Alyssa Ringhausen drove in Quintanar. The final run for the TexAnns came in the sixth inning on Kaitlyn Thomas‘ bunt single score Avery Mullendore to end the game on a run rule.

During Withrow’s outing, the freshman gave the TexAnns a shutdown inning after they scored in two innings to keep the lead intact. Withrow set the A&M International hitters down in order for three innings. Withrow only allowed five base runners in the game.

Joining Wood and Ringhausen in the hit column was Quintanar, Wrinkle, Thomas, Flores, Savannah Stech and Megan Durante with one hit each. Quintanar led the TexAnns with three runs scored while Flores had a pair of runs and walks to reach base all three times.

Game 2: Tarleton 7, Texas A&M International 1

Tarleton kept the offense rolling in game two as Haley Freyman dealt up another complete game and the TexAnns capped off the sweep with a 7-1 win.

Savannah Stech put Tarleton on the board in the first with a two-out, RBI single to plate Maddie Quintanar for a 1-0 lead.

The TexAnns poured it on in the second with four runs on two hits and two errors. Quintanar plated one with an RBI single before Wood coaxed a bases-loaded walk to bring in the second run for a three-run lead. Stech came up big again when the senior capped off the inning with a two-run single up the middle for a 5-0 Tarleton lead.

Tarleton got one more RBI from Wood and Quintanar in the third to put the exclamation point on the Tarleton offense while Freyman continued to deal in the circle en route to her 10th win of the season. Freyman allowed one run on three hits for the game.

Stech led the way at the dish with a 3-for-4 game while Quintanar was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Meghann Wrinkle, Mikayla Stogsdill, Kadyn Kirkpatrick, and Marisa Flores had one hit each to round out the offense

Tarleton will return to LSC action this weekend when the TexAnns host Texas A&M-Kingsville Friday and Saturday.
