Jackets, Bees run away with Glen Rose Tiger Relay

GLEN ROSE (March 23, 2017) — Stephenville amassed 216 points to win the girls division by almost 100 and 141 to capture the boys title by 30 points at the Glen Rose Tiger Relays Thursday evening.

The Honeybees won seven events and swept the top two spots in three events to dominate the meet, with Glen Rose second at 120 points and West third with 118.

Stephenville put an exclamation point on the victory by winning the 4×400 meter relay by more than nine seconds, a fitting end to an evening of domination. Payton Wall, Amber Walker, Kassidy Nowak and Savannah Ivey finished in 4 minutes, 23.50 seconds.

The Bees scored 56 points in the relays, including 20 more for winning the 4×200 with Kristen Pettit, Bailey McBee, Hailey Martin and Kylee Ponder finishing in 1:49.17. They added 16 with Kylee Ponder, McBee, Martin and Walker placing second in the 4×100 in 52.57 seconds.

Ponder, McBee and Wall each added individual victories, with Ponder claiming the title of fastest woman at the meet with a 100 meter dash victory in 12.18. She blew past the field, with second finishing more than three-tenths of a second back.

McBee led a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 meter hurdles, the Bees’ highest scoring event of the meet. McBee finished in 15.70, Martin second in 16.06 and Pettit third in 16.33 for 24 points.

The Bees also posted a 1-2 punch in the 300 meter hurdles with Wall winning in 48.95 and Pettit second in 49.50. Cody Hawks was fourth in 51.73, for 22 points.

Martin was also second in the triple hum,p at 34 feet, 11 inches, and sec on in the long jump at 15-8.25 and scored a total of 32 points.

Nadine Arredondo and Vicki Dahl racked up points in the throwing events. Arredondo won the shot put at 37-2 with Dahl third at 36-7 for 18 points in that event. Dahl won the discus at 120-10, with Arredondo third at 114-9 for another 16 points.

Jordan Carter went to battle with Ally Andress in a showdown of two of the top three ranked high jumpers in Class 4A. Each cleared 5-4 in the fierce wind, but neither could get over their previous best this spring of 5-6. Andress won by clearing 5-4 on her first try, while Carter missed once then cleared the same height. Pettit was fourth at 4-10, as Stephenville added another 12 points in that event.

The Jackets won three events including a 1-2 finish in the boys high jump. Blake Aragon cleared 6-4 and narrowly missed on three attempts at 6-6. Kyle Lindsey of Stephenville was second as the only other jumper to get over 6-2. They combined for 18 points.

The highest scoring event for the Stephenville boys was the 4×100 relay, which they won in 43.62 with Rett Dittfurth, Cole Pettit, Pacen Parker and Krece Nowak.

Parker performed an interesting combination of events, also finishing second in the shot put and fifth in the 200 meter run.

The Jackets were second in the 4×200 relay with Dittfurth, Pettit, Nowak and Lindsey finishing in 1:32.79. The 4×400 team of Pettit, Mason Holstein, Cassidy Smith and Kyle Lindsey crossing the line in 3:36.64.

Lane Rust won the 1,600 in 5:03.80 after placing second in the 800 in 2:11.62. Gilberto Garcia made it a 1-3 punch for 16 points in the 800, taking third in 2:14.19.

The Stephenville teams carry their momentum into their home meet next weekend. The Optimist Relays, sponsored by the Stephenville Optimist club, are Saturday, April 1, at Lem Brock Field.
