Another quality start by Jones leads Stephenville past Life, 6-0

STEPHENVILLE (March 28, 2017) — Easton Jones used his third straight quality start in 8-4A district play to lead Stephenville 13-5-2, 2-3) to a 6-0 shutout of Waxahachie Life (0-16, 0-5) Tuesday night at James T. Young Baseball Field.

Jones, who has not surrendered an earned run in three district starts and holds a 2-1 record in those outings, worked 5.2 innings, getting out of bases loaded jams in the third and fifth to preserve the shutout. The junior struck out six while working around six walks but just two hits. In district, Jones has 25 strikeouts in 17.2 innings while allowing just one earned run and nine hits.

Jones got a strikeout and a pop out to avoid any damage after Life loaded the bases in the top of the third. Caleb Gibbons held on to pop up while falling in foul ground to end the fifth after Life had the base paths juiced again.

Luke Bullard came on for the final 1.1 innings, striking out two and limiting Life to two hits for four total.

Leadoff hitter Derek Gifford was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run for Stephenville, while Trevor Easter was 3-for-3. Jones, Kade Averhoff and Seth Heupel also had RBIs.

The Yellow Jackets are idle Friday, returning to 8-4A action next Tuesday at Glen Rose.
