STEPHENVILLE (April 4, 2017) — Tarleton State University today received an initial $11,000 gift from the Texas Floodplain Management Association to establish the Gilbert Ward Memorial Hydrology/Hydraulics Endowed Scholarship.

Presented by TFMA Executive Director Roy Sedwick, the endowment will financially assist Tarleton graduate and undergraduate students in the areas of environmental engineering, geosciences, environmental sciences, and water and land quality. Recipients must plan a career in the hydraulics and hydrology field.

The scholarship’s namesake, Gilbert Ward, was responsible for managing state and federal grants on flood mitigation projects for the Texas Water Development Board.

Representatives from the Texas Floodplain Management Association (TFMA) announced the establishment of the Gilbert Ward Memorial Hydrology/Hydraulics Endowed Scholarship on Tarleton State University’s annual Day of Giving, April 4. Among those gathered for the scholarship signing ceremony were (l-r) Dr. James Pierce, dean of the College of Science & Technology; Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio; Dr. Karen Murray, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs; TFMA representatives Selina Mitzi and Margie Casebier; and Dr. Steve Damron, dean of the College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences.

Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio, in accepting the donation, said the gift helps the university achieve its goal of becoming the premier student-focused university in Texas and beyond.

“This gift creates opportunities for students to succeed—students who otherwise might not be able to finish their degrees,” Dottavio said. “Scholarships, like this one generously provided by the Texas Floodplain Management Association, allow Tarleton to enable our outstanding students to grow in their major, better preparing them for careers after graduation.”

Along with today’s donation, TFMA pledged to grow the endowment scholarship through annual $1,000 gifts.

Today’s donation came as part of Tarleton’s annual Day of Giving, a 24-hour period focused on fundraising efforts geared toward the support of students.
