SPRINGTOWN (April 19, 2017) — Nadine Arredondo says when she let her third attempt fly in the girls discus Wednesday afternoon that she didn’t feel like it was that great of a throw.
So clearly she was surprised when the official made the announcement, “129-10.”
As in 129 feet, 10 inches, a personal record for the Stephenville senior to win the girls discus at the Region I-4A area track and field meet for districts 7 and 8 at Porcupine Stadium.
“No, I thought it was going to be not good because of the wind,” said Arredondo immediately following the competition. “I was surprised when he announced the distance.”
But Arredondo wasn’t alone in advancing to next week’s Region I-4A Track and Field Championships in Lubbock. Teammates Vicki Dahl, a Danish exchange student, and Alyssa Northcutt took second and fourth, respectively, to give Stephenville three spots in the regional field.
“It’s amazing, these girls are so fun to be with and compete with,” Arredondo said. “I like throwing with them. It’s been good competition between us all year.”
Arredondo and Dahl are also moving on in the shot put, placing third and fourth. And, of course, Arredondo is coming off a run to the state powerlifting meet and currently has a school single-season record 10 home runs for the 8-4A district-leading Stephenville softball team.
“It’s been an awesome experience. I like doing all the sports I can,” said Arredondo. “It’s a lot, but I like doing them all.”
Stephenville’s other victory in the field came from boys high jumper Blake Aragon, who won at 6-4 after clearing 6-10 at the 8-4A district meet nine days prior in Midlothian.
Official distances and places will be released after the running events, which begin at 5 p.m. Below is a list of Stephenville regional qualifiers through the field events. More will be added as results are finalized.
