STEPHENVILLE (April 24, 2017) – The recruiting class for the defending Lone Star Conference Tournament champions continues to get deeper as Tarleton State women’s basketball head coach Misty Wilson has announced the signing of Kennedale standout Lucy Benson.

“Lucy Benson is a player we saw early in recruiting and knew we wanted her,” said Wilson. “The combination of Lucy’s build and athletic ability is what really drew us to her. Kennedale has a great basketball program that has had a great deal of success over the years, which usually leads to having players that are more prepared for the next level and Lucy is no exception.

“She seems very eager to learn and to really embrace the student-athlete experience, therefore I believe she will adapt quickly to the college game,” she continued. “The way Lucy plays the game really seems to embody our philosophy of being selfless, relentless, and unified. Lucy is a relentless rebounder and has the ability to really harass opponents on the defensive side of the ball. There is no doubt in my mind that in her four years at Tarleton, Lucy will leave her mark on our program. I am thrilled Lucy chose Tarleton and that I get to coach her in basketball and life the next four years.”

Benson comes to Tarleton after a three-year standout career at Kennedale where she started for the past three seasons and spent the last two years as a team captain. She was a three-time first-team All-District selection and was the back-to-back District Defensive Player of the Year before earning Co-District MVP honors last season. She is also a two-time TABC All-Region selection and a back-to-back TGCA All-State honoree over the last two years.

In her senior season, she averaged 10.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 3.2 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game. Benson finished her career with 960 total rebounds, which is a new Kennedale High School record.

Benson becomes the fourth member of the TexAnn recruiting class, joining Haley Feisler (Burnet), Ruthie Fox (Odessa), and Makaila Tyer (Godley).
