(April 26, 2017) — Stephenville head coach Casey Weil managed to take a slew of talented freshmen and a pair of senior captains with a few other ingredients along the way and navigated the toughest region in the state to ultimately deliver the school its first girls soccer state championship.

Fittingly, Weil has been named 4A Girls Coach of the Year by the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches. He directed the Bees to a 25-4 overall record, finishing the season on an 11-game win streak including seven playoff wins by a combined margin of 21-2. Weil is in his 10th season at Stephenville and led the Honeybees to their first state tournament appearance following their fifth regional appearance. They have reached the Region I tournament all three seasons the UIL has sponsored 4A soccer.

After Savannah Alford was named Defensive MVP of 4-4A and MVP of the 4A girls state tournament, it was only a waiting game until she was named first-team all-state. :The senior and Midwestern State signee is joined on the all-state roster by second-team selection Beatris Chavarria, another key component to a Honeybee defense that allowed only nine goals in 29 matches and turned in 21 clean sheets.

But you don’t win state championships with defense alone, and Stephenville earned acclaim on the attacking end, too. Freshman Gracie Bales was named honorable-mention all-state, and her classmate and fellow forward Ciara Johnston was named second-team all-region.

The Honeybees had an early win streak lasting 12 matches and finished the season on an 11-match win streak including eliminating two-time reigning state champ and No. 1 ranked Kennedale in a shootout, 0-0 (3-1), in the Region I-4A final, Athens, 2-0 in a state semifinal and Boerne, 2-1, in the state final.
