STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton has announced the addition of a two-time state champion point guard to the women’s basketball recruiting class after Misty Wilson inked Duncanville’s Nina Alvarez to a National Letter of Intent.

“Nina is a great asset to our program,” said Wilson. “She is an outstanding student-athlete that played in one of the most successful women’s basketball programs in Texas. Nina has great court awareness and a very high basketball IQ. She sees the floor very well and does a great job of being the floor general and facilitating offense. She is also a great on-ball defender that has a knack for anticipating offensive players moves.

“I really believe that Nina’s experience at the highest level of high school basketball will make her transition to college basketball easier,” continued Wilson. “Nina is very mature for her age and has a great work ethic, so we are looking forward to her being a TexAnn the next four years.”

Alvarez comes to Tarleton after a three-year varsity career at Duncanville High School, where she has led the Pantherettes to back-to-back 6A state champions.

As a junior, she averaged 4.7 points, 3.4 assists, 2.1 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game on her way to being named a third-team all-district selection and an academic all-district nod. She followed up with a senior campaign where she averaged 5.6 points, 4.2 assists, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game on her way to being named a second-team all-district, academic all-district, and All-State by TABC and TGCA.

She was also her team’s Pantherettes ‘Fighting Heart’ award winner in each of the past two seasons, as well as the ‘Whatever It Takes’ award winner as a junior.

Alvarez becomes the sixth member of the TexAnn Basketball recruiting class, joining her fellow high school signees Haley Feisler (Burnet), Ruthie Fox (Odessa), Makaila Tyer (Godley), Lucy Benson (Kennedale), and Deziray Turner (Austin).
