Driggers wins Challenge in Redding, three locals victorious in Vernon

(May 23, 2017) — The Cowboy Capital of the World was well represented at the Redding Rodeo Champons Challenge in California last week, with Kaleb Driggers of Huckabay winning the team roping along with heeling partner Junior Nogueira in a blistering 3.4.

That highlighted a week that also saw heeler Martin Lucero win twice on the Texas Circuit and both tie-down roper Chase Williams and saddle bronc rider Isaac Diaz join Lucero in the winner’s circle in Vernon.

Lucero, a Stephenville heeler with header Chae Wiley, were fastest at the single-head Killeen Rodeo with a time of 4.9 seconds, winning more than $1,400 each. Clay Tryan of Lipan and Jade Corkill of Huckabay were just behind, finishing in 5.1 for second and about $1,200. Diaz was fourth in the Killeen saddle bronc riding and Williams fourth in tie-down roping.

Vernon hosted the Santa Rosa Roundup, where local cowboys scored a trio of victories. Wiley and Lucero roped head and heels in 7.0 to tie for first in the first round then held on to the average victory with 14.9 on two. The duo pulled in about $1,600 there. Williams was fourth in first-round tie-down roping and third in the second round. His 9.3 and 9.8 won him about $500, an the 19.1 combined won the average and another $1,000. Timber Moore tied for second in the average at 19.7.

Diaz scored 83.5 points aboard Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Gingersnap and was awarded more than $1,200. He added almost $900 in the Two Hands Memorial Rodeo in Perkins, Oklahoma, where he tied for second with 78 points.

The Champions Challenge in Redding included a strong contingent of local team ropers. Behind Griggers and Nogueira, Cody Snow and Stephenville’s Wesley Thorp were second in 4.1 seconds for more than $3,100. Luke Brown of Stephenville and Jake Long of Morgan Mill stopped the clock at 4.2 and were awarded $2,200 for third.
