STEPHENVILLE (May 24, 2017) – Turnbow-Higgs American Legion Post and Auxiliary Unit 240 will conduct a Memorial Day Ceremony at West End Cemetery American Legion Field of Honor located between Lillian and Harbin and South of East Washington near TSU campus beginning at 9 a.m., Monday May 29.
Post 240 Commander, Burton Smith, will MC the ceremony which begins with Memorial Day raising and lowering of flag protocol accompanied with CD bugle sound of “To The Colors” followed by the in unison singing of our National Anthem led by Karsen Styron, SHS Honor Student, Class of 2017. Following guest speakers remarks and laying of wreath, Post 240 Honor Guard will render the traditional 3-volley rifle salute followed by “Taps” played by Post 240 Sgt At Arms, Robert Whiteley. Closing remarks by Commander Smith will conclude the program.
Guest speaker will be Army Captain Nathan Collier, currently an engineer at Collier Consulting in Stephenville where he has been employed since 2016. Nathan is from Stephenville, played football, and graduated from SHS in 2003. Following SHS graduation, Nathan attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, Class of 2007. His class has the distinction of being the first to fully begin the Academy’s admission process after September 11, 2001. Nathan played as an offensive lineman and lettered for Army Football. Upon graduation with a BS in Engineering Management, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Field Artillery.
Limited seating (75) will be available for the 30 minute program.
Most Post 240 Legionnaires will depart the West End Cemetery at conclusion of program and travel to Walmart where they will participate in the 5th annual Walmart/American Legion ‘Free Hot Dog’ and ‘Free Cake’ 2017 Memorial Day event. Walmart will supply the hot dogs and cake and Legionnaires will greet and serve hot dogs and cake to Walmart shoppers. Gazebo will be set up at the grocery entrance.
