STEPHENVILLE (July 12, 2017) — Students and members of Stephenville’s Fudoshin Dojo led Sensei Robi Kunkel are gearing up for the eighth annual Cowboy Capital Karate Championships.

The event, held in association with Stephenville Parks and Recreation Department, is set for August 12 at the City Hall banquet facility at on the grounds of City Limits Texas, Agave Bar & Grill and The Purple Goat on East Washington Street

The dojo reports approximately 350 participants having participated last year with growth expected to push that number past 400 this year. The event is sanctioned by the Amateur Organization of Karate (AOK), authorizing winners to add to their point accumulations form throughout the season. Following regular season event, top athletes are invited to compete in state championships in December. Several highly-ranked competitors call Stephenville home and compete through Fudoshin Dojo, its representatives say. The Cowboy Capital event provides them an opportunity to accumulate winnings and points in their own back yard, so to speak, as the season enter’s its stretch run.

Hosting such a tournament is a significant financial undertaking, says a letter from the dojo requesting sponsors for the tournament. Fiscal sponsors help provide trophies, medics, venue rental, and more. Remaining proceeds are then funneled back into a scholarship program for classes, tournament entry fees and safety equipment for students of Fudoshin Dojo.
