(July 15, 2017)  — Local athletes continue to show the Stephenville area is the Cowboy Capital of the World, and not just the Cowboy Capital of the USA.

Rodeo is a big sport in Canada, with rodeos like the Calgary Stampede bringing in some of the very best competitors from the PRCA and the world. That means they get a heavy dose of Cowboy Capital competitors from Erath County, and in the ongoing Calgary Stampede, those cowboys – and girls – are making another strong showing.

Like three Stephenville High School graduates advancing from Pool B to Showdown Sunday after the final performance of the pool Friday afternoon. One must wonder, does any Canadian high school have three competitors headed to Showdown Sunday, where $100,000 will be on the line in each  event to cap the world’s richest tournament rodeo?

Brothers Jacobs and Sterling Crawley are mainstays at or at least near the top of the world standings in saddle bronc riding and the SHS grades did not disappoint with Sterling finishing second and Jacobs third in Pool B behind Cody DeMoss but ahead Zeke Thurston, who claimed the fourth and final ticket to the Sunday finale.

Sterling won $13,500 Tuesday through Friday and Jacobs pocketed $12,000. Sterling was mister consistency throughout the pool, coming in fourth, second, second and fourth, while Jacobscame through two victorious rides, winning in the first performance Tuesday with 86. points on the back of Spanis Pair and then overcoming no money Wednesday or Thursday by beating Cow Camp for 88 points and top spot in the round.

Moore took third in the pool in tie-down roping and will join Stephenville’s Marty Yates in the finals in that event. Moore earned $13,500 in the four pool performances, going third in 8.3 seconds on Tuesday, making up for a Wednesday no time with clean run of 7.4 seconds for second place on Thursday then finishing up with a fourth-round win in a blistering 6.9 seconds. Caleb Smiidt and Matt Shiozawa split the top two spots in the pool with $15,000 each, and Fred Whitfield’s $8,000 was enough for fourth.

Besides Yates in tie-down, Dublin resident and past Tarleton athlete Richmond Champion came out of Pool A, dominating the first four performances in bareback, to make it five locals headed to Showdown Sunday.

But there could still be more.

Wildcard Saturday is 12:30 p.m. (CST) with 12 competitors in each event fighting for two finals spots to make it a nice, round 10 per event in the $100,000 showdowns.

Huckabay resident Cort Scheer will be in the saddle bronc, and Kassie Mowry of Dublin gets a second shot after missed barrels in two rounds were too much to overcome with her two successful runs in Pool A,  leaving her just $500 out of the finals.
