STEPHENVILLE (July 21, 2017) – Another local music artist is making his mark on the music scene and pursuing his dreams.

BK Helton, whose father, Jimmy Helton, owns Jimmy’s Air Care in Stephenville, graduated from Stephenville High School in 2001 and Tarleton State University in 2011. His parents got his first guitar for him at 13 and he said he fell in love with playing and singing all his favorite songs. A few years later, at 19 and 20, while doing the music for his church – Agape Way Family Church in Stephenville – Helton found song writing and the rest is history.

“I’ve written about 20 or 30 songs,” Helton said. “I think, if I had to classify my music, I’d say it’s more folk and rock. But I’ve also written other kinds of music, too. Lots of worship songs and even a Texas Country style song.”

While he’s mainly played events and coffee shops, Helton said he has started working on some recordings that he hopes to make available on the internet some day soon. Right now, though, Helton is getting ready to play his biggest venue yet.

The singer-song writer has been selected to participate in the Bridging the Music Artist of the Year Concert in Dallas as the Texas Solo Artist of Year. Now, he is competing in a ticket sales competition for studio time with a music production company.

Helton said every ticket he sales helps get him closer to his goal and the studio time. But, honestly, he said, he’s excited to be a part of the event at The Curtain Club in Dallas on Thursday, July 27.

“I’m so excited to have been invited to participate in this event,” he said Friday. “It’s, by far, the biggest event I’ve played and the exposure is great. Before I’ve played events like TOMS at Tarleton (2009-2011) and coffee shops, where people just come and go, and at church. But this will be completely different and I can’t wait.”

If you want to help Helton get closer to his goal, visit his website (https://bkandtheunderstanding.tumblr.com/shop#!/Tickets/c/23955580/offset=0&sort=normal or, https://www.bkandtheunderstanding.tumblr.com/shop and select “Tickets”) and purchase tickets to the event in Dallas and be sure to visit and “Like” his band’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/bkandtheunderstanding/).

Helton’s band includes John Purget, JR Garcia and Graham Litke, but Tim Rugg of Dublin and formerly of the band Fervent Roze and now playing with Giovannie & the Hired Guns is filling in on drums for Graham next Thursday night at the Curtain Club. Courtney Alyse Bishop used to perform with BK & the Understanding as well, she is the niece of Mayor Kenny Weldon.
