It’s time to “Get to know” new Davis:

WHO IS SHE: Davis grew up in Cisco and is married to Hico native Keith Davis, a 2005 graduate of HHS. The couple has a daughter, Keslie, 4, who will be attending pre-kindergarden at Hico this fall.

WHERE IS SHE COMING FROM: Davis was an assistant coach the past two years at Brownwood, where she says she “worked with coaches a who had 20-plus years experience and got a great foundation to begin my career. I worked with great coach and great kids every day.”

Davis spent the previous five years working in human resource management.

EDUCATION: After graduating from Cisco High School, Davis earned her business degree in 2009 from Tarleton State University.

COACHING PHILOSOPHY: “Keep things basic and simple from the ground up. You don’t need to be flashy to be effective. Work the fundamentals of defense, passing and hitting and build on that.”

FACING PRESSURE: “There is a lot of pressure on these girls and on me because of everything Hico has achieved the last four years in volleyball. I ‘m telling them to leave that pressure at the door and focus on meeting daily goals and just getting better every day.”

FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS: Hico has about 20 kids, with Davis hoping for up to 25. She said there were steadily 18-20 she watched play summer ball after being hired in April. She says she has been at conditioning workouts this summer encouraging girls to come out and give volleyball a try. “Increasing numbers and growing the program,” are what she cited as her immediate priorities.

REASONS FOR EXCITEMENT: Hico lost a lot of seniors, and Davis said as of Monday, middle blocker Marissa Warren seemed intent on focusing on basketball her senior year. Polk sisters Shelby and Sidney return, along with Marisol Morales. Davis said the returning letter winners are “good leaders, which we will need because there will be a lot of players moving up who were on the JV last year.”

WHY HICO: “My husband, Keith Davis, is from Hico and our daughter (Keslie) is starting Pre-K this year. We wanted to get back to place like this where she she can go to a great school in a great community like Hico.

WHAT’S AHEAD: The Lady Tigers practice from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. this week, and travel to Early for scrimmages on Saturday. The season opener is next Tuesday, August 8, at Dublin.
