STEPHENVILLE – Every summer, hundreds of the top college baseball players from every level of competition continue their seasons in summer leagues across the country and beyond.

Some stay in the states and compete on teams in the Cape Cod League. Others – like Tarleton standout Blake Adams – head north of the border to compete in Canada. Adams took the opportunity to fine-tune his craft with the Swift Current 57’s in the Western Major Baseball League and put together one of the greatest summer seasons in team history.

“Blake is having a tremendous summer and has continued to build off a really positive junior season,” said Tarleton Head Coach Bryan Conger. “We are proud of the way he has represented our program and we’re excited about his progression as a player.”

Adams, who was a first-team all-conference selection for Tarleton last spring, was named the WMBL’s Rookie of the Year and a first-team All-Star outfielder after hitting .360 in a team-high 47 games for the 57’s. He led the team with 12 home runs, eight doubles, 18 stolen bases and set a Swift Current franchise record with 54 RBI. His team finished the regular season with a 33-15 and heads into the playoffs as a No. 1 seed.

While Adams stole the show in his debut season, he isn’t the only former Texan on the diamond. Will Blanchard is a teammate of Adams on the 57’s and has pitched in eight games this summer. Adams and Blanchard are playing for assistant coach Eric Dorton, who spent the 2016 season as an assistant coach for Conger at Tarleton.

ABOUT THE WMBL:
The Western Major Baseball League (the “WMBL”) is Canada’s pre-eminent summer collegiate baseball league. The predecessors to the WMBL date back to 1948. Over the past 56 years the league has gone by such names as the Canadian-American Baseball League, the Northern Saskatchewan Baseball League, the Alberta-Saskatchewan Baseball League, the Western Canadian Baseball League, the Saskatchewan Baseball League and since 2000, the WMBL. The WMBL boasts a long standing tradition of creating a showcase for top Canadian professional and college prospects while at the same time offering American college players the opportunity to hone their skills in front of enthusiastic baseball fans in towns and cities throughout the Prairies. The WMBL is a wood bat league in the tradition of such outstanding American collegiate circuits as the Cape Cod League, the New England Collegiate League, the Coastal Plains League, the Northwoods League and in the nearby Pacific Northwest, the Pacific International League and the newly formed, West Coast Collegiate League.
