STEPHENVILLE (August 16, 2017) — Dr. Javier Garza will become vice president of Tarleton State University’s new Division of Enrollment Management, effective Sept. 1.

Garza has guided enrollment efforts as assistant vice president of the Office of Enrollment Management for the past three years. In addition to enrollment, the new division will include student success and multicultural initiatives as well as offsite programs in Fort Worth, Waco, Midlothian and the Global Campus—now part of Academic Affairs.

“Creating an executive cabinet level position that combines our student success programs with enrollment management reflects our commitment to better serve students and strengthen the university’s administrative effectiveness,” said Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio. “This new structure focuses our efforts both on recruiting talented new students and keeping current students on the path to graduation.”

The reorganization supports Tarleton’s participation in the national Re-Imagining the First Year of College project, a concerted effort of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) to improve and sustain student achievement.

The change also allows Academic Affairs to concentrate efforts on Tarleton’s growing number of degree and research programs.

“Tarleton is fortunate to have an excellent group of professionals and leaders who are dedicated to helping students realize their dream of a college degree,” Garza said. “I look forward to working with them as we explore opportunities to capitalize on the synergy that this new division will bring. Our focus will be on the success of every Tarleton student.”

Under Garza’s leadership, the Division of Enrollment Management will provide a supportive and seamless network for current and prospective students that includes admissions, academic advising, financial aid, scholarships, career development, disability services and assistance for veterans and their dependents.

“As part of our commitment to provide excellent higher educational opportunities to traditional students as well as those who want to complete a college degree while balancing work and family obligations, we’ll continue to improve and diversify our enrollment processes, moving us closer to becoming the premier student-focused university in Texas and beyond,” Garza explained.

Garza joined Tarleton in 1994 and served as head of the Department of Mathematics for seven years and director of the Division of General Studies and Testing, a precursor to the Office of Student Success and Multicultural Initiatives, for three years.

“Dr. Garza is passionate about Tarleton and about creating a campus environment that enables students to succeed at the University and throughout their lives,” Dottavio said. “I am confident that he’ll lead us through the next steps required to enhance student success and shape our enrollment.”

Garza earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of North Texas and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Southwest Texas State University. He is the recipient of numerous honors, including The Texas A&M University System Award for Teaching Excellence, the Tarleton Barry B. Thompson Service Award and Timothy L. Flinn Faculty Excellence Award for the Department of Mathematics, and the UNT Distinguished Alumnus Award.
