Tarleton career scoring leader Chris Givens killed in car accident

Inducted into Tarleton Athletics HOF in 2006; still coached youth basketball 20 years after Tarleton carerer

STEPHENVILLE (August 28, 2017) — Tarleton State men’s basketball lost one of it s all time greats Saturday, when carer scoring leader Chris Givens was killed in a car accident in the DFW Metroplex.

Givens competed at Tarleton State from 1992-97 ultimately graduating with 2,104 points, still the career record 20 years later. He was inducted into the Tarleton Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006, and more than 20 years after his last game as a Texan, he was passing down his lessons from the hardwood to kids as a youth basketball coach.

 “Chris was an outstanding man who made a positive impact on the lives of many people,” Tarleton men’s basketball coach Lonn Reisman, according to a Monday news release from Ryan Cox of Tarleton athletic communications.”The basketball family at Tarleton will always cherish the great memories we have of Chris on and off the basketball court. He will be greatly missed.”

Teammate Demond Lang had Givens be his best man in his wedding, and based on a Facebook post he made Sunday afternoon, was still close to “G.”

According to his Tarleton Hall of Fame plaque, Givens was an instant contributor as a freshman on a NAIA Division II national tournament team in 1992-93, then averaged 19.9 points and led the team in scoring 15 times while returning to NAIA nationals in 1993-94. He dropped 40 in a first-round NAIA tournament loss to push his 1994-95 scoring average to 22.2. The plaque – with inscription also available on the hall of fame page at TarletonSports.com – says he competed in 97 consecutive games before breaking a foot, then re-breaking it and missing the next season. He came back to finish his eligibility in 1996-97, leading the team in scoring in 20 of 26 games.

Givens was a two-time MVP and also a co-MVP during his time at Tarleton. his hall of fame plaque, as re-generated on TarletonSports.com, is below.
