(September 1, 2017) — Our first thought following area football games. This will be updated until all games involving teams are complete.

STEPHENVILLE 53, CLEBURNE 20

And there was still time left in the third quarter when the Yellow Jackets began pulling starters out of the game.

All you can say is what a difference a year makes, as this time it was Stephenville with sure tackles and the two-worded Yellow Jackets creating the turnovers, including an interception by lockdown cornerback Cole Pettit the only time Cleburne dared throw his way.

Not a fun night for the Cleburne offense a week after losing their starting QB to a sprained ankle.

Oh, the dominance of the Stephenville offensive line helped, of course, as Krece Nowak was able to reel off one big play after another, scoring 4 TDs on runs of 15, 73, 32 and 54 yards.

Total domination by the hometown guys in blue and gold, giving Greg Winder his first season-opening win in his third year as head coach.

HICO 23, DUBLIN 8
Coach Randy Thornton knows his option offense isn’t in midseason form, but you know what, it isn’t midseason. The Tigers dominated the line of the scrimmage, and that was the biggest difference as they finished the game on a 16-0 run, including the final three points on a field goal, a rare occurrence in Tiger land over recent years. Nice Hico debut for Thornton, who once played under Dublin head coach Bob Cervetto.

EVANT 48, LINGLEVILLE 34
The Cardinals fall because of a horrendous start to the game that led to a 40-6 halftime deficit. But then came a 22-0 third quarter surge to make it interesting. This is one you know they wish they could start from the opening kickoff again, as it’s a game Lingleville could have won.
