Tarleton teams sweep East Texas Shootout

COMMERCE (Septembrer 8, 2017)— The Tarleton Cross Country teams opened the 2017 season at the East Texas Shootout hosted by Texas A&M-Commerce with sophomore Johen DeLeon and freshman Justin Botello winning the men’s individual race. The Texans and TexAnns both finished first overall at the meet.

“It was a good start to the season as the weather and course were perfect,” said head coachPat Ponder. “I am really proud of how both teams competed, and this was an awesome opportunity to see my freshman race in their first collegiate meet.”

In the final standings, the Texans who ran a 6,000-meter course scored 18 total points and had four athletes finish top-five and the TexAnns also finished first with 33 total points in the 4,000-meter course.

Deleon and Botello completed the 6k course with a time of 18:21.50. Jarred Elizondo ran a time of 18:27.00, which placed him fourth followed by Quenten Lassester as he crossed the finish line in 18:41.30.  Michael Simcho (19:15.50) and Joshua Perez (19:18.80) finished the course 11th and 12th, respectively.

On the women’s side, Emily Ayers had the top finish for the TexAnns in the 4k with a time of 15:34.40. Gwyneth Garcia took home a third-place finish with a time of 15:38.80 in her first ever collegiate meet. Karen James (15:58.70) and Andelynn Carlton (16:01.10) saw a 10thand 11th place finish Friday evening.

Tarleton’s next meet will be on Sept. 15 as the Texans and TexAnns will compete at the Rebel Invite in Oxford, Mississippi.
