DECATUR (September 22, 2017) Stephenville (4-0) didn’t just remain undefeated, the Yellow Jackets made a bold statement Friday evening, blowing out a Decatur (2-2) team that eliminated them from the playoffs a season ago and was considered a 7-point favorite in their homecoming contest.

The Yellow Jackets didn’t get the memo, using a blocked punt to jump ahead and then riding the 1-2 punch of Easton Jones- he’s back if you didn’t hear – and Krece Nowak to a rout of an Eagle team they have now faced five times in four seasons and could meet again in the playoffs alter this fall.

Why did it go down this way? Physicality, yes I know, that’s a repeat, but it’s still true, and takeaways.

This Yellow Jacket defense is to last season’s what clear sunny days are to cloudy late nights. Not only did Stephenville hold Decatur to just 4-13 on third downs and 0-2 in the second half on fourth downs, but the Dogs of War also took the ball away four times and made them pay on three of them.

Combine that with the second 200-yard rushing performance of Nowak and four TDs with 265 yards through the air by Jones and you have a Stephenville team that suddenly looks like top 10 material.

Once again, the fourth quarter didn’t even matter against a fourth straight opponent the Jackets lost to last year.

At some point you just have to sit back and admit it – the Jackets are back. They’re for real. And look all the way across the board, at the starter’s at each position and guess what, they’re loaded.

My First Financial Bank First Flash thought after this game is that Stephenville set out to make a statement, and Decatur, I’m sorry about the homecoming spoiler, but you walked right into a buzz saw.

Full game report and more to come.

For now, other scores:

Dublin 27, Breckenridge 24 … Heck of a win! Dublin deserved one!

Lingleville 55, Rising Star 35… After two nail biting losses, Cards put one on the left hand side!

Hico 35, Italy 6… This one hasn’t been close in years.

De Leon 37, Santo 0… Rangel rushes for 169 in balanced effort as Bearcats roll again.

First thought following the games! Each Friday and Saturday this football season, brought to you by FIRST FINANCIAL BANK.
