TexAnns win third straight, cruising past UT-Permian Basin

STEPHENVILLE – No. 17 Tarleton continued its winning ways with a straight set win (25-9, 25-19, 25-14) over UT Permian Basin on Saturday in the Wisdom Volleyball Gym.

The TexAnns have won three straight – including two consecutive sweeps – and sit atop the Lone Star Conference standings with a 4-1 record and 10-4 overall.

Tarleton had a hitting percentage of .290 for the match and held UT Permian Basin to a .055 clip. The TexAnns never trail at any point during the match.

In the opening set the TexAnns jumped out to an early 10-3 lead on kills from Hailey Roberts, Jordyn Keamo, Hannah McManus and Adriana Darthuy. A 5-0 stretch gave the TexAnns a double-digit lead in the set at 15-5. Leading 16-8, back-to-back kills by Keamo started a 9-1 run to end the set, including Keamo’s ace for the sets final point.

Tarleton had another hot start in the second set, climbing out to a 4-0 lead on kills from McManus and Roberts. UTPB battled back to a one-point game at 18-17 midway through the set. It was as close as the Falcons would get to taking a set in the match, as the TexAnns responded with a 5-0 stretch on kills from McManus and Darthuy and an ace fromJenn Mendez to swing the momentum back to the home side for a 2-0 lead in the match.

Looking to close the match out in three sets, Tarleton and UTPB swapped points in the opening stages before the TexAnns went on a 9-1 run for a 12-3 lead. Darthuy had three kills during the run, as well as kills from Amber Strangeand Chandler Gow. The lead grew to double digits when Darthuy’s kill began a 6-0 run and pushed the TexAnn lead to 19-6. Alexis Applewhite delivered the final point of the match with a kill down the middle of the court for Tarleton’s seventh sweep of the season.

For the match, Roberts led all players with 15 kills to go with 12 digs. Darthuy also had double-digit kills with 10 on a .455 hitting percentage and nine digs. McManus recorded eight kills on a game-high .467 hitting percentage. McManus also had a game-best four blocks.

Keamo led the TexAnns with 25 assists and 14 digs, while Blanca Izquierdo posted 11 assists and nine digs. Adrianna Knutson posted double-digit digs with 12.

Tarleton will travel to San Antonio for a nonconference double header against Heartland opponents on Friday, Sept. 29. The TexAnns will play Lubbock Christian at 1 p.m. and St. Mary’s at 4 p.m., both games at the Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary’s.
