STEPHENVILLE (October 2, 2017) — Prepare to step back in time when Tarleton State University’s jazz ensembles present their first concert of the season at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Auditorium.

Based on songs recorded at Las Vegas’ Sands Hotel more than 50 years ago, most of the music for the night is from the albums Sinatra at the Sands and Diane Schuur & the Count Basie Orchestra.

Tickets are $5 or free with a valid Tarleton ID, and all seating is general admission. The box office opens one hour before the concert.

“We’re trying to recreate that kind of feeling of being back at the Sands in the 1960s. We’re doing some stuff with the staging and the lighting, trying to make it feel more like a show and not just a sit-down concert,” said Dr. Andrew Stonerock, director of the jazz ensembles.

Jazz Ensemble I performs I Just Found Out About Love with student vocalist Devon Harper; Caught a Touch of Your Love, sung by Tarleton’s Tori Vilches; Every Day (I Have the Blues) behind singer Gwen Steinke; Flight of the Foo Bird; and All of Me.

Lee Ann Hamilton fronts the ensemble on I Loves You Porgy; Cassie Goodwin takes the mike for Travelin’ Blues; and Cheyenne Shreve sings on You Can Have It.

Jazz Ensemble II features four instrumentals: Splanky, Corner Pocket, I Can’t Stop Loving You and Shiny Stockings. Logan Throckmorton is featured vocalist for Come Fly with Me; John Pollock sings Fly Me to the Moon; Zach Zogroki performs I’ve Got You Under My Skin; and Nathan Mena is featured singer for Where or When.

Stonerock, directing his first concert at Tarleton, admits there are butterflies with any performance.

“But, I’m more excited for everyone to see what we’ve been working on,” he said.
