Ten TexAnn softball athletes earn academic acclaim

STEPHENVILLE (October 4, 2017) – Tarleton Softball had a program record 10 student-athletes recognized as Academic All-America Scholar Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Tarleton’s Megan Durante, Maddie Quintanar, Delaney Wayland, Morgan Ling, Savannah Stech, Mikayla Stogsdill,Alyssa Ringhausen, Nyka Wood, Jordan Withrow, and Robyn Gajdica were honored by the nation’s top fastpitch softball organization with certificates after finishing last season with a grade point average higher than 3.5.

“I am very proud of all of these student-athletes,” said head coach Mark Cumpian. “As a program, we have set a very high bar for academics and these girls have done a great job of representing our program on and off the field. I’m very proud of them.”

Wood was a first-team All-LSC selection in her record-breaking junior season. She hit .382 in 57 games and drove in 59 RBI, including a milestone mark at Western New Mexico when she became the school’s all-time RBI leader. Durante was an LSC Gold Glove award winner in her debut season at Tarleton as she boasted a .997 fielding percentage at first base and hit .327 at the dish in 55 games. Quintanar was a third-team All-LSC selection as a true freshman, hitting .328 in 57 games for Tarleton and stealing 27 games.

Stech, Stogsdill, and Ringhausen wrapped up their respective careers as the senior leaders for Tarleton, leading the TexAnns to the NCAA regional tournament in their swan song seasons. Stech hit .335 in 57 games while Ringhausen and Stogsdill combined for 15 RBI and 12 runs scored.

Jordan Withrow enjoyed a freshman campaign that saw her boast a 2.57 ERA in 111.2 innings of work with a team-high 103 strikeouts. Wayland, Gajdica, and Ling combined to provide the TexAnns with 13 runs scored, two RBI, and seven defensive putouts off the bench in 2017.

In 2016, Melody Mayse and Avery Mullendore became the first two TexAnn Softball players in the program’s history to earn Academic All-American recognition.
