STEPHENVILLE (October 15, 2017) – Stephenville is a community full of fighters and seventh grader Mia McCray and her family are no different. They are currently in a battle, and fighting hard.

“While we know that science and medicine will certainly help Mia, our faith in Jesus is our strongest armor,” Mia’s mom, Cory Lynn McCray said.

Mia has osteosarcoma, or bone cancer. On Mia’s 12th birthday, a large tumor was discovered on a bone under her knee, and after an MRI, a second tumor was found in her right ankle. Mia had a biopsy on September 1, and was admitted to Dallas Children’s Medical Center on September 11, where she is currently staying with her dad, David McCray.

The doctors have said the tumors are “non-ossifying,” meaning they didn’t turn into bone when she was a baby.

“They have no explanation about how or why this happens, and they do not attribute it to injury. ’It just happens,’ is what we were told,” Cory Lynn said.

Through this process, Mia has missed a lot of school, but Cory Lynn said when she contacted Mia’s principal, Donna Ward, she received an understanding and kind response.

“When a child has this kind of support from all of their teachers, who each has probably 120+ students, you know they are in the right place!” Cory Lynn said.

Beyond support from the administration, both Henderson Junior High and Stephenville High School band families have rallied together to fight for Mia. Emily McLemore, whose daughter is friends with Mia, started a t-shirt order and 553 shirts were ordered. All proceeds go to the McCray family, and extra t-shirts will be sold at the Velvet 12 from October 24-27.

On October 24, the HJH bands will be Marching for Mia at the Purple Out Pep Rally, and the SHS band will do the same at the varsity football game on October 27.

There is also a benefit account at Citizens National Bank with no processing fees required to donate to the McCray family. To keep up with the Mia’s battle with cancer, follow the Facebook page, “Hope for Mia,” where her family posts updates about her situation.

Despite this battle with cancer, Mia and her family are remaining strong in their faith with the Stephenville community surrounding them.

“We welcome prayers, questions, homeopathic ideology…We plan to communicate well with her medical staff and run any and everything by them,” Cory Lynn said. “There will be many tears, fears, and trials, but we know that in the end, Mia’s outcome will be done by the will of God.”
