Diaz tops among saddle bronc riders in final tour standings

STEPHENVILLE (October 16, 2017) — They might as well have just moved the saddle bronc riding semifinals and finals to conclude the All-American ProRodeo Series Finals from Waco to Stephenville.

The finalists were a Tarleton cowboy and a Stephenville HIgh School graduate, after all, and once all the pay days were sorted out four of the top six in the final All-American Pro Rodeo Series Tour Standings were from Desdemona, Stephenville or have competed for Tarleton.

Team roping usually takes the cake when it comes to quantity of local athletes turning in quality performances at the biggest of rodeos, and while area headers and heelers certainly did their thing, it was the saddle bronc guys who really reminded everyone in Waco that Stephenville, Erath County and the immediate area is the true Cowboy Capital of the World.

Win Huckabay heeler Pau Eaves won the finals in in 5.4 seconds, nobody realized they were just warming up the arena for the local competitors to saddle up and take over.

Jacobs Crawley won the fist round and Brody Cress of Tarleton was second in Bracket I, then Cress turned around and too first, followed by Crawley in third in the second round. In Bracket II, Isaac Diaz, a former Tarleton Texan residing in Desdemona was a steady fourth in each round. Bracket tIII meant Sterling Crawley time, as the Stephenville HIgh School product was second then first in the two rounds.

The semifinals an finals were the Brody Cress show. The Tarleton superstar who will join the Crawley brothers in the National Finals Rodeo in December has had an almost unimaginably successful rookie season on tour, and added to it with 84 points to tie Sterling Crawley at the top of the semifinal standings, then 86.5 points to edge out Sterling by just half a point in the finals.

Cress pulled out of Waco having pocketed almost $15,000 at the finals, while Sterling earned more than $12,000.

Diaz and Jacobs Crawley performed well enough to still came out first and fourth, respectively, in the tour standings, with Cress fifth and Sterling Crawley sixth.

Eaves won more than $14,000 and other team ropers also saw nice bank deposits after their performances. Jace Melvin of Stephenville won a round in his bracket of the steer wrestling competition, pocketing almost $2,800.
