STEPHENVILLE (November 1, 2017) — In concert with the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I—The Great War, The War to End All Wars—the Dick Smith Library at Tarleton State University honors those who fought and shares American experiences with three events just prior to Veterans Day.
Everyone is invited.
The first event—WWI Film Night: A Soldier’s Experience—is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in Room 107 of the Nursing Building on the Stephenville campus.
The free epic film, All Quiet on the Western Front—based on a book of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque—highlights the ordinary soldier’s experience. Both the 1930 film and the book, published a year earlier, provide a realistic and harrowing account of the war. Snacks will be provided.
A ceremony to honor Tarleton alumni who fought in WWI is planned for 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, near the cannon in front of the E. J. Howell Education Building. Volunteers will hand out red poppies, donated by the Texas VFW Auxiliary, and play Taps as a tribute to veterans. Red poppies have been a symbol of remembrance since WWI ended in 1918. Coffee and donuts will be offered.
Finally, a panel of scholars from Tarleton and the University of Texas at Arlington looks at American Experiences of the First World War at noon Friday, Nov. 10, in Room 177 of the College of Business Administration. Lunch provided.
Panelists and their topics are:
• Dr. Marcy Tanter, Tarleton, professor of English—Participation and experience of women in the war;
• Dr. Mattie Fitch, Tarleton, assistant professor of history—French portrayal and perceptions of Americans fighting in Europe; and
• Dr. Kenyon Zimmer, UTA, associate professor of history—wartime and post-war civil liberty violations of citizens and immigrants.
Funding for the Veterans Day events comes from the Library of America Project and a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
