STEPHENVILLE (November 3, 2017) — There were some big numbers put up on the local gridiron last week, both team and individually. And for some, they are part of bigger season numbers.

Perhaps the biggest stat line of the year, in 11-man action, is quarterback Kevin Yeager of De Leon and his line of 117-178 passing (65.7 percent) for 1,639 yards and 25 touchdowns with just two interceptions. That’s a passer rating of 187.18, according to primecomputing.com. The junior was 14-15 for 338 yards and 7 TDs last week good for a rating of 436.61.

It’s been an eye-popping statistical season all around for the Bearcats, who no doubt have several all-state candidates. Yeager, for one, and Anthony Rangel, who balances out the offense for 1,367 yards and 19 touchdowns on 89 carries. That’s 15.4 yards per carry and a touchdown every 4.7 carries.

The Bearcats still have a lot of fresh bodies entering the final two weeks of the season, and that shouldn’t change tonight when they visit San Saba, though a more difficult test in Goldthwaite lies ahead next Friday in De Leon. Rangel is averaging just 8.1 carries per game and Yeager just 22.3 pass attempts per game, though, he and several others do play both ways.

Also impressive – the Bearcats are allowing only 8.1 points per contest and have pitched four shutouts including the 70-0 win over Valley Mills last Friday.

They wren’t the only area team to score 70 last Friday as Stephenville matched its second highest scoring total in a 71-0 rout of Big Spring, which after its first series of the second half had negative 31 total yards. That possession resulted in a turnover on downs at their own one yard line following a long snap over the head of the punter for the Steers. A play later, Stephenville took a 58-0 lead after scoring 51 points in the first half.

There are also some silly numbers being put up in six-man, where the FAITH Knights are 8-0, and they aren’t just good because they compete in the Texas Association of Independent Athletic Organizations. They should their mental toughness in a fourth-quarter comeback against Iredell, which has a winning record in UIL.

The Knights  also beat UIL member Walnut Springs like a drum to begin the season in the Hico Super Six event, and have knocked off fellow TAIAO power San Antonio FEAST, always  contender in Division I where they could meet the Knights in the upcoming post season with FAITH set to take a different playoff route than their typical Division II journey.

The Knights also beat a good TAPPS team in Austin Veritas, and among all the wins are, obviously, some big-time numbers. They topped 100 points for the first time in program history in last week’s 103-55 thumping of the Lubbock Titans, and Travis Loper only added to his resume for National Homeschool Player of the Year, an award won by previous FAITH star Shadd Cole.

His season totals – 64-89 passing (71.9 percent) for 1,147 yards and 20 TDs; 94 carries for 1,179 yards (12.5 per carry and 168.4 per game) and 22 scores; 2 receptions for 47 yards and 2 TDs, and his only kickoff return was a 75-yard TD. Don’t forget his 2 TDs on defense for a total of 27 he has scored himself for a whopping 47 TDs he has either scored or passed for. He has also made 61 tackles (8.1 per game), 19 tackles for loss (2.4 per game), 3 interceptions, a fumble recovery a sack and a QB hurry on defense.

The Knights have ended five games early – with leads of 45 or more at or following halftime – and still have produced 1,381 yards passing and 1,433 rushing with the offense responsible for 55 of their 60 total TDs.

Don’t forget Tom VanKranenburg, the DQ Player of the Week. He made 30 tackles, the most by any area player in a game this season, 6-man or 11. The senior also scored two touchdowns and passed for a third to help Linglevill1e beat Gordon for the first time in school history. The Cardinals soared 60-24, outscoring the Longhorns 54-8 after trailing 16-6 early on.

Here’s a look at the complete team offensive box scores for our area 11-man squads.
