STEPHENVILLE (November 7, 2017) — No. 13 Stephenville (1-0) did just as expected in its girls basketball opener Tuesday in routing Millsap, though head coach Alan Thorpe would surely tell you it wasn’t a pretty affair.

The Honeybees won with athleticism  and a steady dose of Payton Wall. One of five starters returning from a Region 1-4A semifinal team, the senior guard poured in 20 points in the 70-20 win over their outmanned 2A opponent.

Wall tied the scoring of Millsap’s entire team and the Bees scored more to lead 21-6 after a quarter than Millsap did all evening st Gandy Gym.

It’s career head coaching win 492 for Alan Thorpe, who has guided the Bees to three regional regional tournament appearances (the round of 16) the last six seasons and has advanced past the area round nine consecutive years.

A week will pass before the Bees look to pull Thorpe within seven victories of 50. A much more difficult test lies ahead next Tuesday when they visit Granbury.

Tesslie Baker runt up 14 points in a strong performance inside. Jayci Morton and Madison Carter scored all of their eight points apiece before halftime, when it was 40-12. That grew to 49-18 entering the fourth.

Tenacious defenders Hailey Martin and Madison Gilder each dropped seven points through the net, Kristen Pettit contributed five free throws and Mikayla Diaz added one.

The Bees manages to shoot a fair 38 percent despite Martin canning their lone 3-point attempt. They had 16 turnovers at halftime, said Thorpe, who had set the goal at 10 or less for the game.
