STEPHENVILLE (November 11, 2017) — Stephenville tipped off its boys basketball season three days earlier than normal Saturday and did so successfully with a 65-47 victory over 2A De Leon at Gandy Gym.

The Yellow Jackets rode a 30 combined points from Braden Hayes and Skyler Stilwell and 50 percent shooting as a team. Mason Holstein chipped in 10 points for Stephenville, which dominated the smaller Barcats 33-19 on the backboards, that margin producing an 11-3 advantage in second half scoring.

The difference came in the middle quarters, when Stephenville won the second quarter 17-6 to lead 29-18 at halftime after the Bearcats stayed even in the first quarter. The Jackets then rolled to a 21-15 advantage in the third to take a comfortable 17-point lead into the fourth.

De Leon relied too much on an outside shot that for the most part was not going down. The Bearcats shot just 27 percent from deep, going 11-37. They attempted only 18 shots from inside the arc.
