STEPHENVILLE (December 5, 2017) — Skylar Stilwell poured in 26 points for Stephenville Tuesday, but 5A Aledo took control with a 16-2 run to begin the second quarter of a 60-53 Bearcat win at Gandy Gym.
Aledo scored 11 points off turnovers – four transition baskets and a quick left-wing 3 –during the second quarter run. The Bearcats outscored Stephenville 19-5 in the period for a 26-17 lead at intermission.
The advantage grew to 13 for Aledo before Stephenville took its turn transforming takeaways into easy buckets, mainly by Mason Holstein. The senior guard got loose in transition and scored eight during an 11-0 run that brought the Jackets within two.
But the Bearcats took a timeout then immediately buried back-to-back 3-pointers for 41-33 advantage and were ahead at least seven the rest of the way. Stephenville appeared to be gathering some momentum in the fourth, but a player control foul took away an opportunity to cut into a 47-40 deficit with 5:06 to play. The Bearcats scored the next four – again out of a timeout – to lead 51-40.
It was 59-48 before Stilwell scored five of the final six including a corner 3. He also scored the first 10 points of the tame for Stephenville. Everyone else was slow out the gate and Stephenville led 12-7 after the first.
