Brown and Long roped head and heels in 4.1 seconds to split the top two spots with local heeler Kory Koontz and his partner on a night when team ropers form the Cowboy Capital of the World were as dominant as ever – and perhaps more so – at the National Finals Rodeo.
Continuing the torrid success of area ropers at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas were Huckabay heeler Paul Eaves and heading partner Clay Smith, who took third and have a healthy lead of more than four seconds in the average with only five teams successful. in posting times on all four head.
Local partners Chad Masters and Travis Graves were fourth Sunday, while Stephenville heeler Cory Petska and header Erich Rogers were fifth.
How dominant currently are Erath County ropers, particularly heelers? Consider this – Cory Petska is the fourth ranked heeler from Erath County. He is also fourth in the world standings behind Junior Nogueira, Long and Eaves. The top two headers and five of the top 10 are also local athletes.
With his lead in the average, Eaves would take home the world title if it all ended today. Of course, Nogueira, Long and the rest of the field are eager to try and wrestle away the top spot over the remaining six rounds.

It took a few nights for Marty Yates to get going in the tie-down roping, but everyone knew Boy Wonder would turn in a fast one sooner or later.
It happened Sunday with Yates roping and tying in 7.7 seconds for second in the round, just one-tenth of a second out of first. He is 10th in the world standings and jumped to ninth in the all-around rankings.
Tarleton student Brody Cress continued his stellar rookie campaign by placing second in saddle bronc riding Tuesday. Cress has proven he can come up clutch in some of the most competitive atmospheres in all of rodeo already as a rookie and enters the final six rounds of the season sitting second in the NFR average just seven points out of first.
Cress is sixth in the world standings, while Jacobs Crawley is first and his brother Sterling Crawley eighth. Sterling is third in the average.
Richmond Champion is third in the average and fourth in the world in bareback riding. He tied for sixth on Sunday.
