(January 4, 2017) — Late leads are slippery these days in the hands of the Tarleton State men’s basketball team, and the Texans saw another escape their grasp Thursday evening.

Brandon Williams gave Angelo State the win and himself a double-double with a rebound and putback with 12 seconds left. Corinthian Ramsey missed a desperation 3-point try at the other end for Tarleton State, which didn’t score a single point following two Deshawn Riddick free throws with three has become a troubling trend for Lonn Reisman’s team. Ramsey’s 3 at the end had to be hurried, but quick 3-pointers early in the shot clock by Josh Hawley and Nosa Ebomwonyi with Tarleton playing from in front.

Willimas had the game-winning shot, 11 points and 10 rebounds, collecting all his boards in the second half. It was certainly the better half for the Rams, who were actually strong at the end of each half. They finished the game on a 9-0 run beginning with a free throw by Williams. A jumper by Kirksey a layup by Cole Johnson off one of Tarleton’s quick outside shots trimmed it to 71-69 before Brown tied it with a pair from the stripe with 1:01 left. Hawley missed a 3 that was rebounded by Kirksey, who then missed one with 15 seconds left before Williams grabbed the biggest offensive board of the night.

Hawley knocked down a 3 then jammed home an offensive rebound for five straight points after a 53-52 Tarleton lead after ASU grabbed its first lead and pushed it to four over the first 5:20 of the second half. the Rams, though, led 60-58 after free throws by Cole-Johnson and 3 by Adler.  A Riddick 3 and Ebomwonyi lay-up pushed Tarleton ahead and moments later it was back-to-back buckets by Ramsey for a 69-62 lead. ASU pulled within five before the Riddick free throws, followed by three minutes of shutout defense and just enough offense for ASU.

It was three minutes of misery for Tarleton.

Williams may have been the hero for ASU, but Kirksey was the star with 21 points and 10 boards. for ASU. Behind Williams,/ Crouch scored 10 despite missing some time with a back injury.

Hawley scored 15 and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double and Ramsey scored 13 but was just 5-20 from the floor including 0-8 from the arc. Ramsey and Riddick each distributed five assists.

Tarleton blasted off to a 34-16 lead after just more than 12 minutes, but ASU calmed the storm, outscoring Tarleton by 12 over the rest of the half, which ended with Tarleton on top 43-37.

The Texans host Texas A&M-Kingsville and ASU visits to A&M-Kingsville, both on Saturday. Each game is tentatively 4 p.m. I’ll probably come just to watch.
