(January 11, 20(17 ) — McKinley Bostad scored 11 points in the final 3 minutes, 32 seconds, helping Tarleton State (10-6, 4-4)  pour in 29 points in the fourth quarter of a 71-67 road win over Texas Woman’s (6-7, 3-4) at Kitty McGee Arena in Denton Thursday.

Bostad gave Tarleton its largest lead of 60-52 with a 3-pointer, then answered five straight TWU points with another triple to make it 63-57 with 2:57 remaining.

The junior guard then went 5-6 from the foul stripe over the final two minutes, including one to finish the scoring with Tarleton holding a two-possession lead with two seconds left.

Bostad finished with a season-high 24 points to lead Tarleton to its sixth win in seven games despite trailing 34-28 at halftime and still down 46-42 before the high scoring final quarter.

Tarleton fell behind by going just 2-10 from the arc and 2-4 from the free throw line before halftime. The TexAnns came back by flipping the script, hitting all six of their 3-point tries in the second half, and knocking down 13 of 15 free throws.

Bostad stuffed the stat sheet with eight boards, five steals, three assists and a blocked shot while playing all but four minutes. She was 7-13 from the floor including 4-5 from the arc while going 6-8 form the line.

Mackenzie Hailey collected 16 points, nine boards and four steals. The sophomore forward and preseason LSC Player of the Year pumped in seven points in the fourth.

Tarleton managed to keep its absence from the win column a brief one. The TexAnns had won five straight before losing at Texas A&M-Commerce Tuesday. They have a week to prepare for the next two-game road trip, which takes them to West Texas A&M next Thursday and to UT-Permian Basin on Saturday, January 20.

Hailey and freshman Makaila Tyer joined Bostad in hitting 3-pointers in the final quarter when the TexAnns were 4-4 from long range. They hit the biggest buckets during an extended 15-4 that took up 4 minutes, 43 seconds of the final period.

The TexAnns trailed 48-45 after a TWU layup with 9:05 left but began the decisive run 50 seconds later on a jumper by freshman point guard Nina Alvarez.

Hailey banked in a layup for a 49-48 Tarleton lead with 7:35 remaining, and the TexAnns never trailed again.

Tyer hit a 3 almost a minute later, then Bri’anna Gray made a layup to cut it to 52-50. It was the first TWU points in 2 minutes, 59 seconds.

Hailey wasted no time ensuring the momentum would stick with the TexAnns, stepping out and burying a 3 just 12 seconds later.

TWU hit a jumper before the run ended on the first 3 in the fourth by Bostad. Her second wasn’t far behind, then she shouldered the load from the foul stripe in the final minutes.

Katie Webster scored 12 points while grabbing five boards,  swiping two steals and dealing a pair of assists. Kyle Collins added eight points for Tarleton, while Tiara Tatum scored six with three assists.

Tarleton shot 40 percent on the road including 48 percent in the second half. The TexAnns were 50 percent from 3 and 79 percent – 15-19 – from the line.

The Pioneers were led by Ma’K’La Woods with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Alexis Nezianya scored 12 and hit the boards 10 times.  KJ Stastny and April Whitney also had 12 points for a TWU side that shot 42 percent but just 32 percent from the arc and were outscored by eight from the foul stripe.

As well as Tarleton has played the last month, the TexAnns still have a mountain to climb to contend for one of the top spots in the LSC.

As they work to overcome a horrendous start to conference play, Tarleton has climbed within 2.5 games of co-leaders WTAMU and TAMU-Commerce. They are 1.5 behind Midwestern State and half a game back of Angelo State and Eastern New Mexico.

NOTES: Hailey is third in scoring in the LSC with 14.6 points per game. Bostad is seventh at 13.0…

…Bostad is 28-64 from the arc, good for 43.8 percent. Because shooters are required to average 2.5 successful 3-point shots per game to qualify for the list of 3-point percentage leaders, only one LSC woman, Ava Battese of Cameron, is on the list. But Battese is connecting on all of 27.6 percent from deep…

…Hailey was just a rebound away from a double-double. She has 18 of them in her Tarleton career, which is not yet half complete…

…Tarleton improved to 31-16 in its series with TWU, which dates back to 1978. The Pioneers had won four of the previous five before Thursday’s meeting when Tarleton improved to 9-12 as the visiting team…

…The biggest game around the conference Thursday was in San Angelo, where the Rams gave much of the conference hope for a wide open race with a dominant performance and 68-51 win against No. 2 West Texas A&M. The Lady Buffs are defending champions of the LSC and were 14-0 prior to visiting ASU….

…The Tarleton men were idle Thursday and host Arlington Baptist College in a non-conference tilt at Wisdom Gym Saturday with tipoff set for 4 p.m.
