STEPHENVILLE (February 3, 2018) — Tarleton State University sophomores Jarrett Robertson and Brandon Smith spent last week making summer plans.
They’re going to do some fishing.
The duo, both agriculture industries and agencies majors, earned a spot in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Bass Fishing Tournament, hauling in more than 30 pounds of trophy bass at the qualifying tournament in Louisiana.
Smith, who caught his first bass at age 5, has been part of the Tarleton Bass Club for two years.
“Earning a spot to fish at the national championship is an awesome opportunity to finally show others what we can do and that we can compete and beat the best of the best,” he said. “It’s an amazing opportunity to represent the school and get our name out there.”
Cason Kelly, president of Tarleton’s Bass Fishing Club, said more teams than usual advanced from the qualifying tournament, due to higher than usual participation.
“Generally, there are 10 or 15 teams that move on to nationals,” he said, “but this tournament had record-setting attendance, so 30 teams from all over the country qualified.”
The tournament, fished at Toledo Bend Reservoir in Many, La., drew 250 teams.
The date and site for the national tournament have yet to be announced.
