(February 8, 2018) — It’s hard enough to win a game on the road in the Lone Star Conference, let alone win it three times.
Lonn Reisman must have felt as if it took three wins in one to earn victory No. 649 in his 30 seasons at Tarleton State (14-9, 9-5)Thursday night.
It took going 38-43 from the foul stripe including 9-12 in overtime to win 78-72 after Texas A&M-Kingsville (11-12, 4-9) overcame a six-point deficit in the final seven seconds of regulation at the Steinke Center.
But the Texans got it done, beating the Javelinas for the 17th time in their last 19 meetings, their 37th victory in 50 all-time confrontations with their Lone Star Conference rivals. Eastern New Mexico is the only school Tarleton has defeated more frequently in its 25 years since joining NCAA Division II and the Lone Star Conference.
Reisman, who actually has 670 career wins with 21 in his lone season at Connors State (Junior) College, gets his first chance at victory No. 650 leading the Texans when they visit Angelo State at about 4 p.m. Saturday following a 2 p.m. women’s game at Stephens Arena in San Angelo.
Tarleton will also be looking to stay ahead of ASU in the LSC standings. The Texans enter the game tied alongside Texas A&M-Commerce for third with the Rams half a game back in fifth and having win the first meeting in Stephenville.
The Texans were 29-31 from the line in regulation. Corinthian Ramsey played 44 total minutes and was 17-18 from the stripe to score 19 points despite making only one field goal. Deshawn Riddick was 6-10 from the floor including 4-6 from 3 while going 8-10 from the stripe to score 24 points. Josh Hawley was 6-11 from the field and scored 17.
The Tarleton team record for free throws in a game is 44, set on January 19, 2017 in an LSC win over West Texas A&M. The individual record belongs to Brandon Burney at 19-20 against Western Washington on December 28, 1999.
Tarleton led 50-36 with less than 13 minutes to play, but the Javelinas rallied furiously with an 18-4 run over the next seven minutes, tying it up with 5:50 left.
Tarleton wasn’t phased, charging back ahead 67-61 following a pair of Ramsey foul shots with seven seconds remaining.

The Javelinas used a 3-pointer by Johnnathan Lindsey, his only field goal of the game, and a turnover by Jaraan Lands, who dropped a pass out of bounds, to set up a buzzer-beating 3 by Cris Boleware that tied it at 67-67.
Again unphased, Tarleton made a field goal and nine free throws while out-rebounding the Javelinas 10-5 in overtime. The Texans were just 1-6 from the floor in the extra five minutes, while A&M-Kingsville was just 2-10.
The Javs held a brief 69-68 lead following a put-back slam by Robert Stevenson, but Tarleton scored the next five, the first four on a pair of free throws and a tip-in by Hawley. The final four Tarleton points came on free throws by Riddick, Ramsey and Jesse Hill.
Tarleton shot respectable road percentages of 47.1 percent both overall and from outside the arc. The Texans hit 88.4 percent from the line – 12-13 before intermission and 17-18 in the second half before the last dozen attempts in overtime.
A&M-Kingsville shot 41.7 percent overall but settled for long jump shots with 33 of 60 attempts coming from outside the arc, where the Javs hit just 27.3 percent. They were 13-21 from the stripe.
Tarleton improved to 22-22 in overtime games under Reisman. The Texans are 1-1 this season, having fallen 103-100 in double overtime to Colorado State-Pueblo during the Texan Tip-off Classic. It was the first overtime game this season for A&M-Kingsville.
The Javs were led by Trey Sumpter with 21 points. Boleware and Stevenson each scored 12 and Caelan Neal had 10.
