Elroy Thomas Payne

(July 20, 1933 – February 11, 2018)

Elroy Thomas Payne, 84, of Stephenville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 11, 2018 with his family by his side.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M Wednesday, February 14 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Corsicana with Rodney Payne and Weldon Branham officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana. Visitation with the family will begin at 12:00 prior to the service in the chapel at the funeral home.

Elroy was born on July 20, 1933 in Crews, Texas to the late Thomas Copeland and Vera Francis Hale Payne. After graduating from McMurry College in 1956, he coached in Brownfield and Cleburne, and retired after 31 years as an Agency Manager with State Farm Insurance Company. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, inducted into the McMurry College Athletic Hall of Honor where he was a two time All American running back and was affiliated with the Methodist Church. Elroy was an avid supporter of the Special Olympics and always had a heart for serving the youth in his community.

Survivors include his daughter, Cindy and husband Paul Asby of Corsicana; son, Rodney and wife Debby Payne of Stephenville; grandchildren, Shae Smith of Possum Kingdom Lake and Cole Armstrong of Dallas; great grandchildren, Shyanne Smith, Hunter Smith, and Cayman Smith; sister Evahjo Bozeman of San Angelo; sister-in-law, Martha Payne of Lubbock, and the mother of his children, Merle Payne. He is also survived and loved by a host of family and friends whom he also loved.

Besides his parents, Elroy was also preceded in death by 5 sisters, Eron, Evelyn, Earldean, Ella Mae, and Ethylene and 2 brothers, Edgar and Eugene and a grandson, Shane Wells.
