(February 12, 2018) — Just another bi-district playoff victory.

It’s reached the point that anything less would be perceived almost like missing the playoffs altogether for a Stephenville program that has survived not only the bi-district round but also the area round of the girls basketball playoffs each of the past eight seasons, all under head coach Alan Thorpe.

Stephenville took car of the first of those without difficulty Monday evening when Mineral Wells couldn’t handle the Honeybee defensive pressure or its balanced scoring in a 63-32 blowout. Tesslie Baker and Jayci Morton scored 10 points each while Payton Wall and Jordan Carter each netted nine for the Honeybees. Right on their heels were Hailey Martin with seven points and Alee McClendon six.

Mineral Wells knocked down only eight shots from the floor including, beginning with just two in the first quarter and none in the second. They scored five points in each of those periods thanks to six first-half free throws, and Stephenville was ahead 27-10. The stinging continued in the second half, and the game was over after an 18-7 third made 45-17.

Mineral Wells almost doubled its point total in the fourth quarter, but Stephenville had its primary weapons resting on the bench by that time.

A ninth consecutive area-round win and spot among the final 32 teams in the conference is up for grabs when the Honeybees face Burkburnett on Thursday. The game is at Jacksboro High School but a start time was not immediately determined Monday because coaches were not yet sure if the venue would host just one game or a doubleheader.

The regional quarterfinal round has been where the Honeybees have had mixed success through the years. The SHS-Burkburnett winner will meet Abilene Wylie or Midlothian Heritage – the Bees split with Heritage in 8-4A – in that round next Monday or Tuesday with the winner moving on to the Rip Griffin Center at Lubbock Christian University of the Region I-4A tournament February 22-23.
