(February 16, 2018) — Mineral Wells has proven reaching the Region I-4A girls soccer tournament last year was no fluke.

The Lady Rams are for real.

Of course, so are the Stephenville Honeybees, winners of that regional tournament before capturing the first state championship in the sport.

Mineral Wells presented Stephenville with arguably the best defensive effort they have faced this season, and Stephenville presented the same right back at the Lady Rams.

In the end, the Honeybees rung up a seventh straight shutout and Ciara Johnston headed in the only goal off a beautiful corner delivered by Haleigh Beam.

With the improvements of Mineral Wells, the steady second to third round success Brownwood has consistently experienced and, of course, the presence of Abilene Wylie, an absolute regional and state force that split its matches the state champion Bees of last year, District 4-4A no doubt measures up to any 4A grouping in the state in terms of talent and difficulty.

The league has to proven to prepare its member sides well for the postseason, as Stephenville won state, after beating Brownwood in the regional quarterfinals, and Mineral Wells made its first regional appearance after eliminating Wylie in the same round. All four teams won at least two playoff matches and the combined 2017 playoff record of the four sides was a most impressive 14-3.

All the sides face off three times to comprise the district schedule, which for Stephenville continues at Abilene Wylie at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Then comes three consecutive matches on the home pitch at Lem Brock Field. They host Brownwood next Friday, February 23, Mineral Wells on February 27 and Wylie on March 2.
