TARLETON (March 6, 2018) – The Sigma Alpha-Alpha Zeta Chapter at Tarleton held a Buck Off in Heritage Park on the TSU Campus on Tuesday evening.  The Buck Off is a mechanical bull riding competition where the top three rides received prizes such as LJT tickets. The money raised at this event, and beforehand from sponsors and donations, is given to the philanthropy group Heifer International. Heifer International is charity that works to end world hunger and poverty by purchasing animals for a family in need, which is what the proceeds made at Buck Off will be used for. These animals can provide food and revenue to these families.  Attendees were able to enjoy mechanical bull riding, and hamburgers, as well as some live music from Bodi Mathis and headliners, Cottonwood Crows.
Sigma Alpha is a professional agricultural sorority that promotes scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship among its members. The TSU Chapter is a member of the Professional Fraternity Association (PFA), a national organization of professional Greek letter organizations. You will find Sigma Alpha members standing out as leaders on their campuses and in the workforce. They are dedicated to the motto: Women Excelling in Agriculture. 1. While I admire Sigma Alpha-Alpha Zeta desire to do the right thing, it would be a good idea for them to do their homework around the reality of Heifer International. There is a side that you do not see in the shiny brochure. The animals are shipped long distance in every type of weather and often without any care. The marginal lands that they typically live on can barely sustain humans let alone animal agriculture. And, the people who are receiving the animals do not have the resources to see a veterinarian or care for the animals in a way that meets all the animal’s needs. There are other organizations that do not send animals, but who do support these communities with sustainable agriculture/products. One example is A Well-Fed World. While the marketing for Heifer International is excellent, the reality for the animals in their programs is not anything that a compassionate person would want to support. Thanks you for considering raising funds for other organizations.
