STEPHENVILLE (March 8, 2018) — Magnolia received eight hits from eight players and took advantage of four Stephenville errors to win 13-4 when the teams met Thursday, opening day of tournament competition at Wimberley.

Magnolia, a 5A school near Houston, rattled off six runs in both the third and fourth innings and added one in the fifth before the Yellow Jackets showed life with four runs in the home half of the fifth.

Trevor Easter was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI for the Yellow Jackets, but their only remaining hit was by Gage Graham, who was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Gabe Moore, was another of the five Yellow Jackets to draw a walk and had an RBI without getting a hit. The remaining walks were issued to Noah Carroll, Derek Gifford and Paul Lettunich.

Stephenville did not pitch nearly as poor as 13 runs in five innings would suggest. Only six of those were earned, while Stephenville had to earn each of its scores. Daniel Luna started with a pair of scoreless innings before the walks – he issued four – and errors caught up to him. He was charged with six runs, but only one was earned.

It was a rough inning of relief for Cade Dunavent. Lettinuch pitched fifth and while he surrendered a run on two hits he also fired two strikeouts in his only inning.

The tournament continues through Saturday and is followed by opening day of district play in 8-4A..The Yellow Jackets (4-4-1) welcome Venus to James T. Young Baseball Field for what is also the official home opener in Stephenville. The Yellow Jackets were home for preseason scrimmage action, but nothing since the beginning of the regular season.
