KINGSVILLE – After trailing for the first six innings of the day, Tarleton rallied with two unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings of game one and led the entirety of game two to take both games of Saturday’s twin bill and sweep the series.
After only surrendering a pair of unearned runs in the opening frame, Megan Rosewell was superb in the circle as a pair of late runs backed a complete-game, extra-inning victory by the senior right-hander.
The Javelinas took advantage of two Tarleton miscues in the opening inning to take a 2-0 lead after the opening inning, but then Rosewell settled in. She blanked the Javelinas over the next seven innings and improved to 6-0 on the season allowing just five hits and a walk while striking out three.
Meanwhile, the Tarleton offense cracked the score column in the fourth inning when a Kingsville error opened the door for a Karli Herron RBI single into left center to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
That score carried into the final frame and Herron reached as the tying run with one away. After the second out of the inning, Destiny Crumpley coaxed a two-out walk to keep the game alive before Georgia Capell tied the game with an RBI single to left center. After Rosewell sat the Javelinas down in the seventh, Nyka Wood led the inning off with a double and then pinch-runner Morgan Ling moved to third on an a sacrifice bunt before Tanna Huie brought her home with a sacrifice fly to put the TexAnns on top for good.
Wood and Herron each had two hits while Capell had one to round out the five-hit performance for Tarleton.
Tarleton kept the offense rolling with seven runs over the first two innings en route to a 9-4 victory and its fifth consecutive win.
Nyka Wood got the scoring started in the opening frame with an RBI double for a quick 1-0 lead.
Tarleton opened the flood gates with a six spot in the second inning, beginning with back-to-back, one-out singles from Elizabeth Svienty and Maddie Quintanar. Capell and Wood each plated one with RBI singles before Megan Durantedrove in a pair with a two-run double. Marisa Flores capped off the biggest inning of the weekend with a two-RBI double to left for a 7-0 Tarleton lead.
After Kingsville answered with four runs over the next two innings, Durante and Flores added RBI singles in the sixth for the final runs of the weekend.
Jordan Withrow earned her 13th victory of the year with four innings of work, over which she struck out five. Karlie Milburn made her Tarleton debut with three shutout innings of one-hit softball to earn her first career save.
Tarleton pounded out 14 hits, led by seven combined hits from Capell, Wrinkle, and Wood in the first three spots of the lineups. Flores (3) and Durante (2) also had multi-hit performances while Svienty and Quintanar had one each to round out the offense. Flores and Durante led the way with three RBI each.
Tarleton has a full week of games in Stephenville this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Tuesday against St. Mary’s in a makeup of a postponed series from earlier this season. Tarleton will follow up with a single game on Wednesday against Friends (Ks.) before welcoming Western New Mexico for four games next weekend.
