SAN ANGELO – Tarleton’s all-time leading run producer came through with three of the biggest RBI of her senior season Thursday night as Nyka Wood hammered two-out, three-run home run to break a 3-3 tie in the fourth and lead the TexAnns to a 6-3 victory over No. 4 Angelo State.
Angelo State got the scoring started in the first inning with a two-run home but Tarleton had an answer in the top of the second when a two-out Angelo error opened the doors for two unearned Tarleton runs. Marisa Flores and Karli Herron extended the inning by reaching on an error and drawing a walk before Elizabeth Svienty’s single into right tied things up at 2-2. Flores scored on Svienty’s RBI while Herron came around to score on the second error of the inning.
The Rambelles responded with one in the third to take a 3-2 lead, which carried into the top of the fourth.
Svienty and Maddie Quintanar reached on back-to-back singles with one out in the fourth before Georgia Capell tied the game with an RBI double down the left field line. After the second out of the inning, Wood turned the game upside down with a mighty swing of the bat to cap off the four-run inning.
Jordan Withrow sat the Rambelles down in order in three of the last four innings while dancing out of danger in the sixth when Quintanar cut down the final out of the inning at second base trying to stretch a single into a double. Withrow ended things with a flawless seventh inning of work.
Withrow earned her 17th win of the season after allowing three runs – two earned – on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts.
Tarleton offense plated its six runs on 11 hits, led by a three-hit day from Tanna Huie. Svienty and Quintanar also boasted multi-hit games – each going 2-3 with a run scored – while Capell, Wood, Megan Durante, and Flores had one hit each.
