(April 6, 2018) It’s Sweet-16 time for both the Stephenville Yellow Jacket and Honeybee soccer teams who head to Aledo tonight for a doubleheader matchup in the Class 4A playoffs.
The Honeybees 5 p.m. against Mineral Wells
Stephenville opened the playoffs with a 9-0 over Burkburnett and sent a strong message to everyone in the playoffs – the defending state champions are still locked and loaded. In case anyone missed the first message, they then sent a second one with a 6-0 drubbing of Lubbock Estacado.
The Honeybees are only getting stronger as coach Casey Weil substituted freely in working toward getting his younger players playoff experience.
Mineral Wells has recorded only four goals, but the Lady Rams’ defense has come up big in both of their 2-1 and 2-0 victories over Bridgeport and Pampa. On the opposite side of the bracket, Midlothian Heritage and Kennedale are still in the hunt and a possible next round opponent.
The Yellow Jackets 7 p.m. against Bridgeport
The Yellow Jackets had a squeaker in their bi-district round against Burkburnett winning by a 1-0 score before ripping off a 5-1 area victory over Mountain View.
As expected things don’t get any easier in each round and Bridgeport will be no exception as they sport a multi-pronged attack that has netted 11 goals to their opponent’s one. The one common factor between the two teams is they are stingy on defense.
Coach Taylor Smith got the rare opportunity to scout Bridgeport when the Jackets played in Midland and Bridgeport was in nearby Odessa for their bi-district contest. Bridgeport mauled Brownwood 7-1 and blanked Clint 4-0.
Midlothian Heritage and Anna also remain as possible playoff opponents for the Jackets.
