(April 11, 2018) – It might take longer to list the accomplishments of the Stephenville Honeybee soccer team and its regional semifinal opponent, Midlothian Heritage, than it takes to play the game Friday morning at 11 AM at the Birdville ISD Fine Arts/Athletic Complex in North Richland Hills.
To say the least it is a scary matchup for Stephenville who dropped their second game of the season 2-1 to Heritage.
“We are whole lot different team now” Coach Casey Weil. “We figure out what our opponents are doing. We don’t get sucked into playing their game and we stick to our own.”
That method has led to Stephenville winning 17 of their last 18 games and an overall 25-3-1 season record. Stephenville defense has proven staff with 16 shutouts over the last 18 games.
Heritage is on a 13 game winning streak and was a dominating winner in district play where the Lady Jaguars allowed only two goals while scoring 52.
On paper, the two teams appear evenly matched and have had equal results in the playoffs. Heritage beat Lake Worth 6-0 in bi-district, outlasted Celina 2-0 and then sent a big message they are for real with a 3-1 win against Kennedale a former two-time state champion.
The Honeybees had a tough time against Mineral Wells’ defense scoring their second goal with just 30 seconds to play. Stephenville pasted Lubbock Estacada 6-0 in the area round and laid out Burkburnett 9-0 in bi-district.
“We are healthy and the girls are ready to get started,” Weil said. “Waiting for a week to play has everyone ready.”
Poll watchers have the Lady Jaguars (25-3-1) ranked 3rd about Stephenville who is ranked 5th in the last Texas Girls Coaches Association 4A poll.
The winner of the contest will get a good look at their upcoming playoff opponent as district foe Abilene Wylie and Fort Worth Castleberry are slated for 1 p.m. start on the same field. Saturday’s regional final will be contested at 1 p.m. at the same site.
Stephenville is set to depart for their game Friday at 7:45 a.m.
