STEPHENVILLE (April 12, 2018) – On Thursday, April 6, the Stephenville Area Elks Lodge presented a check of $4,359.26 to Julie Black, mother of Skylar Black. This was the second check the Elks Lodge has presented to the Black family. The first, which was $1,320.62, was awarded on February 15.
“The reason for two grants is because the first one was only for the amount our local lodge was available for; the second was for any funds left over from other lodges across the state of Texas,” Larry Stanford, Stephenville Area Elks Lodge Grant Coordinator and Trustee, said. “Both grants were awarded to the Black family to assist in getting a motorized wheelchair for Skylar.”
Skylar has a rare brain disorder called semi-lobar holoprosencephaly, which means her brain did not completely divide into two separate hemispheres before she was born. Although the Black family was told their daughter wouldn’t survive birth, Skyler is a fighter and she will be six years old in May.
“I want to take the time and thank the Elk Lodge of Stephenville for their generosity by giving Skylar a couple of grants,” Julie Black commented on Facebook. “It took all my being to not cry tonight, but we are so grateful for all that you have done for us. We are so blessed to live in a community that is so caring and loving to those who have special needs. They go out of their way for our kids and love them just as much as we do. I am proud to live in this small town. Thank you to everyone who has ever been a part of my daughter’s life.”
The money is provided by the Texas State Elks Special Needs Grant Program in Ottine, Texas.
