TexAnns knock off Western New Mexico for third straight LSC road win

SILVER CITY, NM – Tarleton dominated Western New Mexico in an 8-1 rout to win its third consecutive Lone Star Conference tennis match on the road and improve to 4-1 in league play, which has them tied atop the standings.

“We knew today would be a challenge with the wind and altitude, but I think our girls handled it very well,” said head coach Lance Drake. “They came out aggressive and with a lot of energy in doubles. Erika (Johnston) played a big role in the win today and we’re looking forward to a tough conference match against Cameron in Lawton on Sunday afternoon.”

Johnston and her doubles partner, Neetika Sud, jumped all over the Mustangs to begin doubles action and secured the first point of the day for Tarleton with an 8-0 sweep in the No. 2 slot. Shelby Fillingame and Chrystalynn Shirley (8-2) followed suit before Alicia Barbaroux and Sherine Salem (8-4) finished off the sweep in the top-seeded match.

Sud and Johnston were the first to finish once again when singles started as Sud wrapped up a 6-4, 6-2 win in the No. 2 match and Johnston took care of the No. 4 match with a 6-0, 6-3 score to deliver the match for Tarleton with the necessary five points. Fillingame (6-2, 6-1), Barbaroux (6-4, 7-6 [4]), and Shirley (4-6, 6-3, 16-14) earned wins in their matches, as well.

Tarleton will play its final Lone Star Conference match of the season Sunday afternoon in a makeup of an earlier scheduled match. The TexAnns will head to Lawton, Oklahoma for a 2 p.m. showdown against Cameron.
