STEPHENVILLE (April 18, 2018) — Dr. Chris Shao has been appointed Dean of Tarleton State University’s College of Business Administration, effective June 1. Currently associate dean for the college, he succeeds Dr. Steve Steed, who’s retiring.

“Dr. Shao has a deep commitment and understanding for where we’re headed,” said Dr. Karen Murray, Tarleton provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “He’ll continue to partner with faculty, students, alumni and other stakeholders to enhance our growing business program and bring us closer to accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business(AACSB).”

AACSB endorsement represents the highest standard of achievement for business schools worldwide. Less than 5 percent of the world’s 13,000 business programs have earned AACSB approval.

“While Tarleton is sanctioned by the ACBSP (Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs), certification by the AACSB will make Tarleton graduates more desirable to employers,” Murray explained. “The university will enjoy greater access to the business community and increased the potential for national, even international, research collaboration.”

Shao joined Tarleton full time in 2015 as professor of marketing, advancing to head of the Department of Marketing and Computer Information Systems. He was named associate dean of the College of Business in 2016.

“The College of Business has grown immensely in the last few years,” Shao said. “Dr. Steed has been a tremendous catalyst for advancing the college. I look forward to maintaining the momentum he started and taking the college to the next level.”

Prior to arriving at Tarleton, Shao served in leadership roles at Midwestern State University’s Dillard College of Business, where he was heavily involved in the AASCB accreditation process.

In addition to Midwestern State University, Shao has taught at Southern Arkansas University and the University of Texas at Arlington as well as Erfurt University of Applied Sciences in Germany and the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education in Mexico.

He is an active scholar with more than 15 journal publications and eight conference proceedings.

Shao earned his bachelor’s degree in English from the Chinese Culture University in Taipei, his MBA from Pittsburg State University in Kansas and his Ph.D. in business administration-marketing from UTA.

He is a member of the American Marketing Association, Marketing Management Association, Society for Marketing Advances and Beta Gamma Sigma.
