No. 13 TexAnns, Wild in first after opening round of LSC Golf Championships

ABILENE – No. 13 Tarleton Women’s Golf holds a three-stroke lead for first place after the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament at the Diamondback Golf Club on Monday.

The TexAnns, who have won the last two LSC Championships, fired an opening-round score of 285 (+1) to take the lead on the 6,009-yard Par 71 course. The TexAnns totaled 52 pars and a tournament-best 15 birdies on the day. Tarleton was able to separate from the field on Par 5’s, where they shot -3 as a team and had an average score of 4.80 to lead all teams.

West Texas A&M is in second place with a score of 288 (+4), followed by Midwestern State in third at 295 (+11). The TexAnns have won an LSC women’s golf record 10 conference championships, including two straight and nine out of the last 10.

Casey Wild is in a four-way tie for first place after one round, carding 2-under-par 69. Wild shot even par on the front nine with one birdie and followed up with a bogey-free back nine, shooting 2-under with birdies on No. 16 and 17. For the round, Wild had a tournament-high 14 pars and three birdies.

Junie Khaw also shot under par, carding a 70 (-1) and sits in fifth place. Khaw birdied her first two holes and finished even par on the front nine. A birdie on No. 13 and no bogies on the back nine allowed Khaw to finish under par. Overall, the freshman recorded 13 pars and had three birdies.

Sarah Gee, the 2018 LSC Player of the Year, is right behind Khaw in sixth place after shooting even par on the day. Gee was 1-over on the front nine and 1-under on the back nine. Gee’s round was highlighted by five birdies, which leads all players. The senior also recorded eight pars.

Casey Leatherman shot 4-over-par 75 and is tied for 14th place. Leatherman finished 3-over on the front nine and 1-over on the back and totaled nine pars and three birdies. Casey Leatherman is tied for 39th with a score of 86 (+15).

The TexAnns will tee off in the final round on Tuesday, April 24 at 9:40 a.m.
