(April 26, 2018) – Julia Flores pitched a complete game shutout and joined in on nine Stephenville hits as the Honeybees topped Springtown’s Lady Porcupines 9-0 for a game-one victory in their best-of-three Bi-District series in Graford Thursday.

Patience at the plate paid off in a big way for the Honeybees who drew 13 walks when they weren’t pounding the ball. Jettie Funderburgh and Jessica Ebeling took three free trips each while Morgan DiCiccio, Madison Gilder and Bianka Garcia also picked up walks.

When Springtown wasn’t handing out free passes their defense was being kept on its toes as Stephenville stepped on the throttle in the second inning.

Following a pair of walks for Garcia and Ebeling, Samantha Gaitan smacked a single to load the bases for the Honeybees. The first of Funderburgh’s three walks scored Garcia and a fielder’s choice by DiCiccio left Stephenville on thin ice with runners on board and two outs.

Funderburgh’s heady base running skills came into play on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead when she scored from third base. A Flore’s double made it 4-0 with Ebeling and DiCiccio scoring on the grounder.

Ebeling tacked on Stephenville’s next run with another passed-ball run scored before Stephenville again opened the floodgates with three runs in the fourth inning.

DiCiccio and Gilder picked up walks to start the fourth and Flores made Springtown pay for their mistake as she hit a ball six feet up the wall in left center scoring DiCiccio. A hard-hit ground out from Garcia pushed Gilder across the plate and a single from Gaitan made it 8-0 when Flores scored.

Garcia rounded out the scoring with a lead-off double in the sixth inning and advanced to third on a single from Ebeling. Gaitan’s second groundout was enough to get Garcia across the plate for the 9-0 final.

“We played the kind of softball that win playoff games,” Coach Rus Mayes said. “Patience at the plate paid off for us today and our defense backed up Julia’s pitching.”

Stephenville returns to Graford Friday at 7 p.m. and a win gives them the Bi-District title. A stumble will have them playing game three at 3 p.m. Saturday.
